What to Look For

A variety of variations are used to mark vegan dishes. Check for a legend, otherwise ask. Here are the most common symbols you'll encounter.

"V" Symbol
Usually means vegan, but some places mistakenly use it for vegetarian
VE VEGAN
"VE" or "VGN"
Usually means vegan

Their are several vegan certifications, usually they have a circle with two plants or a v inside.

How to Substitute

Most restaurants are happy to accommodate simple swaps. Here are the most reliable substitutions to ask for.

Meat / Poultry
Ask for tofu, tempeh, mushrooms, or beans as a protein swap.
Butter / Cream
Request olive oil or ask if they have a dairy-free cooking option.
Cheese
Ask to omit it, or at vegan-friendly spots request dairy-free cheese.
Eggs
Often added by default, simply ask to leave them out.
Fish Sauce / Oyster Sauce
Ask for soy sauce or tamari as a substitute, common at Asian spots.
Broth-based soups
Ask if a vegetable broth base is available instead of chicken or beef.

Indian cuisine has a rich vegetarian tradition — most restaurants have plentiful vegan options.
Dal (lentils), chana masala, aloo gobi, and vegetable curries are typically vegan.
Rice and many breads (puri, chapati) are vegan. Naan is usually made with dairy — ask first.
